Children from primary schools across Bedford are being given the opportunity to enjoy free educational activity dates at The Chellington Centre, thanks to generous funding from The Panacea Trust.
The initiative is designed to support schools that may otherwise find it difficult to provide educational visits and outdoor learning experiences. Schools can choose between two fun-packed programmes that engage pupils with the natural and historical environments of the beautiful North Bedfordshire countryside; Map Explorers and Anglo Saxons meet the Vikings.
In Map Explorers, pupils use LEGO brick modelling to develop their map reading skills before putting their knowledge into practice through outdoor orienteering challenges. Combining map and compass reading, children navigate around the surrounding countryside, building confidence, teamwork and problem-solving skills along the way.
In Anglo-Saxons meet the Vikings, children step back in the 9th century, when for a short time the River Great Ouse marked the border between the Danelaw and the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms of Mercia and Wessex. Dressed for everyday life and later for battle and through re-enactment, children learn how archaeology and history help us understand the past.
