Key Stage 2: Map Explorers

These new activity resources have been designed for teachers & leaders to deliver in order to keep the cost of the residential as low as possible

Children learn and practise the OS map reading and orienteering skills in this programme of team activities and games.

‘Maps with LEGO’ develops their skills in recognising OS map symbols used in navigation and orientating a map. Children use LEGO to build their own 3 models and maps.

Playing ‘Swamp Escape’ and ‘Rescue Chelly the Owl’ allow children to step into the map, ensuring they are all confident with the use of 4 figure grid references. Progressing to 6 figure grid references will allow them to set off on a ‘Map Adventure’ around Harrold village.

‘On site Orienteering’ gives children the opportunity to competitively practise map orientation and familiarises them with orienteering terminology and equipment. A final ‘Off site Orienteering’ challenge combines OS map reading with the use of orienteering equipment, introducing children to compasses and challenging them to navigate around the countryside surrounding the centre.

Individual activity resource packs can be booked in any combination:

  • Maps with LEGO: £20
  • Swamp Escape: £10
  • Rescue Chelly the Owl: £10
  • Map Adventure: £10

Alternatively, these activities can be led by a Chellington tutor (subject to availability) for £150 per 2 hour session (materials included).
